When Bradford Anderson woke up this morning he didn’t immediately know that he had received his fifth Daytime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for his portrayal of Damian Spinelli on ABC’s “General Hospital.” How is that even possible, you ask? “I sleep with my phone off,” the actor admits. “That’s the fun thing about being on the west coast. You generally wake up to the news.” He adds, “Just turning on my phone and seeing how many emails and texts I get is generally an indication of a ‘yay’ or a ‘nay.'”
For those of you wondering what Anderson submitted for his Emmy reel, the actor shares that it was the episode in which Ellie (Emily Wilson) told Spinelli that Connie was actually his daughter while they were in the hospital. “It had a nice arc. It was heightened circumstance. It felt like the one,” he explains. As for whether he misses being on the show, he notes, “I miss the people for sure. They were my family for seven years. They saw me through a very amazing time in my life, getting married, having kids… that was the best seven years. Sharing it with people like that, I certainly miss the people. The character I don’t miss as much.” Before jumping to any conclusions, he notes, “[While] I enjoyed playing him, he was at a good place to leave him. He’s doing fine in Portland by himself, I imagine, but I do miss the people for sure.”
A day hasn’t even gone by since learning he was nominated, but Anderson reveals that he’s already spoken to most of his fellow nominees, and speaks very fondly of them all. “My category specifically is really fun because some of my good friends and great friends [are nominated]. Steve Burton [Dylan McAvoy, ‘The Young and the Restless'; ex-Jason Morgan, ‘GH’] is one of my absolute best friends. Dominic [Zamprogna; Dante Falconeri, ‘GH’] and I are great friends. In the time that we’ve known each other we’ve both had kids and have gone through really wonderful times in our lives, so we share a lot. Scott Clifton [Liam Spencer, ‘The Bold and the Beautiful'; ex-Dillon Quartermaine, ‘GH’], I’ve known for years. When I came on [‘GH’ in 2006] he was one of my very good friends. It’s been fun to see his life blossom the way it has. Eric Martsolf [Brady Black, ‘Days of our Lives’] and I go to events together. We have such a great time. He’s a fantastic guy.” Ultimately, however, “Rather than be pitted against them, I’d rather we go on a fishing trip, but that’s how it goes.”
Speaking of how it goes, if he had it his way, there would be 50 nominees in each category. “It’s fun that the pre-nominations are announced because they never used to be announced the way they are now. That’s fun because so many other people get recognized for their work,” says Anderson. “You root for everybody. You wish everyone could get nominated. There are so many, and that doesn’t take away from the people that were nominated. We’re just celebrating each other and that’s what it’s all about.”
Whether or not it’s televised or streamed online, “The 41st Annual Daytime Emmy Awards” is scheduled to take place at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California on Sunday, June 22 and Anderson can’t wait for the day to arrive. “It’s at a beautiful place, we get to eat a lovely meal [and] spend time with each other.” While he can’t specifically comment on what he’s going to wear this early in the game, he says with a chuckle, “I can pretty much guarantee that I own it already.”
After her daughter died last year as a result of a hit-and-run, a desperate Chloe (Elizabeth Hendrickson) will attempt everything in her power to have another child with Billy Abbott (David Tom), even going so far as to drug and “seduce” the married man into having sex with her. The question is, is it a “sinful seduction” or an outright rape? In a newly released promo for next week’s episodes of CBS’ “The Young and the Restless,” the series calls what Chloe is doing to get her hands on Billy’s crown jewels (pun intended) as a sinful seduction, but visually it’s clear that Billy isn’t even conscious for Chloe’s plan. Meanwhile, Billy is also unknowingly already dealing with another set of baby drama. It turns out that his wife, Victoria (Amelia Heinle), is pregnant! The only problem is that it could be Billy’s, or it could be Stitch’s (Sean Carrigan). As for Ian Ward (Ray Wise), he better not get in the way of his son Dylan (Steve Burton) when it comes to the woman he loves, or he’ll end up paying the ultimate price.
Though “The Young and the Restless’” Melissa Claire Egan (Chelsea Newman) has been nominated for four Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series Emmy awards in the past, this fifth nomination isn’t any less special. In fact, she says it’s always an honor to be recognized for hard work. “It’s always so thrilling, and it’s always an exciting, pleasant, flattering thing,” she enthuses. “I’ve gotten texts and emails and Facebook messages, and it really is so, so lovely. You really feel like it’s your birthday but even more so. Everybody professionally and personally comes out. And it’s so, so heartwarming.”
Of course, it doesn’t always feel the best to be competing against close co-stars like Elizabeth Hendrickson (Chloe Mitchell) and Amelia Heinle (Victoria Newman), but that’s the way it goes when you work in a talented pool of actors. “Its such a great group,” she explains. “We watch everyone’s preliminary reels now, and so I saw the women from ‘General Hospital,’ [Jane Elliott (Tracy Quartermaine) and Kelly Sullivan (Kate Howard)], and they were so great, too, so I feel like it’s such a solid [race]. It’s really anybody’s ballgame. Everybody was so good, and everybody’s reels were so good and intense. So it’s really just flattering, and I feel really lucky and blessed.”
Surprisingly, while many of her “Y&R” co-stars submitted material revolving around Delia’s death, Egan chose something a bit different. “I submitted an episode that aired in early September, when the whole Chelsea/Dylan [Steve Burton]/Adam [Michael Muhney] baby bombshell was coming out,” she reveals. “The episode was of me and Steve Burton, and it’s when everything is coming to a head.
“It’s actually my favorite reel I’ve ever submitted to the Emmys, because it’s such an arc,” she continues. “Connor has his eye thing, and Chelsea says, ‘Well, Adam had this same condition,’ and he’s like, ‘What are the odds your [ex] and our son have the same condition?’ and I’m like, ‘You’ll have to ask a doctor,’ and it’s very much like, ‘Oh, this girl is caught!’ And then it kind of arcs up to her telling him, ‘He’s not your son, he’s Adam’s son,’ and then everything explodes from that admission. It was like a roller coaster, like, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, up and then it was just like boom! And down and up and down and up. It was really like a roller coaster ride through all seven scenes. So it was really a no-brainer for me. I just picked that one.”
Choosing her reel, however, is about as much as the bride-to-be has prepared thus far. For instance, when asked if she’s thought about what she’ll wear come the Emmy ceremony on June 22, she laughs and says she has no idea. “My wedding [to Matt Katrosar] is in three months, so that’s kind of been my focus,” she admits.
But at least having a groom-to-be means she has an instant Emmy date, which is one less thing to worry about! “Oh for sure, my future hubby has to be my date,” she gushes. “He loves it. He loves coming to support [me], and he loves a lot of my co-stars that he’s met, so it’s a fun date night.”
And she says it will be fun whether the ceremony will be shown on television or not. “I think at the end of the day, daytime fans, especially soap fans, are so passionate and so awesome and always so supportive no matter what happens… so I think it’ll still be just as special to the fans if they can stream it [online].” she explains. “We know they’re there with us and their energy is with us. So we’ll just have to see what happens. If you look at ‘One Life to Live,’ that was a streamed show, and it’s now up for Best Show, so as long as they can stream it, somehow, it’ll still be exciting, and we can always feel that fan energy. Even on Twitter today, the fans are so passionate and so dedicated, and we always feel that coming through, no matter if it’s through the TV or the computer.”
A hero will fall.
His life on the line and his attacker goes on the run…
On today’s episode of CBS’ “The Young and the Restless,” Christine Blair (Lauralee Bell) admitted to friend Lauren Fenmore (Tracey E. Bregman) that she’s looking forward to a bright future ahead for her and her husband, Paul Williams (Doug Davidson), which includes the possibility of her having a baby with Genoa City’s top cop. “It used to be all about my career, getting ahead and proving myself, but once I married Paul, things changed. I want us to create something together. A testament to our love… I just hope it’s not too late!”
Fans of daytime drama won’t be surprised to learn that Christine’s comments may be foreshadowing of what’s about to go down very soon across town.
In this week’s promo, Paul is caught in the crossfire after Dylan (Steve Burton) and Austin (Matthew Atkinson) battle over a gun. As a result, Paul’s life hangs in the balance and Christine is worried she’s about to lose her husband, while Austin reveals plans to go on the run, but Summer (Hunter King) isn’t willing to let him go without her.
Although CBS is not broadcasting the awards itself this year, the network announced today that it’ll celebrate “The 41st Annual Daytime Emmy Awards” with six days of Twitter chats with several of its stars, producers and executives from CBS Daytime’s “The Young and the Restless,” “The Bold and the Beautiful,” “The Talk,” “Let’s Make a Deal” and “The Price is Right.” The chats will take place every weekday beginning Friday, June 13 and running through Friday, June 20, leading up to daytime’s biggest night on Sunday, June 22.
While he isn’t nominated for an Emmy this year, “B&B’s” Sean Kanan kicks things off beginning tomorrow, June 13, which also happens to coincide with his return to the world’s most watched daytime soap opera when his character Deacon Sharpe reunites with his daughter, Hope Logan (Kim Matula). Also taking part in Twitter chats are “Y&R’s” Steve Burton (Dylan McAvoy), Doug Davidson (Paul Williams) and Christian Le Blanc (Michael Baldwin), “B&B’s” Heather Tom (Katie Logan) and Scott Clifton (Liam Spencer), “Deal” model Tiffany Coyne, “Price” executive producer Mike Richards and CBS Daytime Senior Vice President, Angelica McDaniel. “Talk” hosts Julie Chen, Sara Gilbert, Sharon Osbourne and Sheryl Underwood will jump-start Daytime Emmy Week with a live group chat on Monday, June 16.
With 60 nominations overall, the most for any network, CBS is the most watched broadcast network in the daypart. “Y&R” received 26 nominations, more than any other show. “B&B” received 18 nominations, “The Talk” received five, “Deal” received three and “Price is Right” received two nominations.
